Jakarta, September 17, 2025 – Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has once again made a proud achievement in the world of national research. Based on the results of the 2025 Fiscal Year Priority Research Downstreaming Program selection announced by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, UGM ranked third with 48 funded research proposals. This position places UGM on par with other leading research universities, namely Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) in first place with 79 titles, and Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) in second place with 58 titles.
The 2025 Research Commercialization Program is designed to accelerate the transformation of university research results so that they do not stop at the laboratory stage but can be adopted by industry and provide real solutions to society. There are three main schemes in this program, namely Industry Invitation, which is aimed at responding to the real needs of industry; Technology Promotion, which is the downstreaming of leading university research results; and Synergy, which encourages multi-party collaboration based on integrated technology transfer. Of the total 1,445 proposals submitted, 376 came from the Industry Invitation scheme, 380 from Technology Promotion, and 689 from Synergy. The government then disbursed funding of up to IDR 176.9 billion, excluding in-cash and in-kind contributions from industry partners.
The dominance of public universities was evident in the selection results, with a contribution of 81% of the total funded proposals, while private universities contributed 19%. In terms of clusters, the majority came from the Independent cluster at 78.3%, followed by the Main cluster at 17.5%, and the Intermediate cluster at 3.1%. This data indicates that the research capacity of national universities, especially those in the Independent cluster such as UGM, is getting stronger and more competitive.
When viewed from the research field, there are three priority topics that are most frequently proposed nationally, namely electronics and digital with 213 titles, food and beverages with 94 titles, and agriculture (palm oil, rubber, coconut, cocoa) with 76 titles. This data shows the direction of national research priorities that focus on strategic sectors and have a direct impact on the Indonesian economy. The field of electronics and digital is the most dominant, in line with the trend of technology transformation based on AI, IoT, and semiconductors. Meanwhile, research in the food and beverage and agro sectors emphasizes the importance of food self-sufficiency and the downstreaming of leading commodities in maintaining economic resilience. UGM itself is actively proposing research in these fields, so that this third place achievement reflects the alignment of UGM’s research focus with national policy directions.
This achievement is also inseparable from the extensive involvement of industry partners, both state-owned enterprises such as PLN, Pindad, Krakatau Steel, KAI, INKA, and DAMRI, as well as private companies and technology startups. This collaboration is expected to accelerate the process of research product validation, scale-up, and commercialization. This important momentum was further emphasized through the signing of the 2025 Priority Research Downstreaming Program contract by universities receiving funding, including UGM, organized by the Directorate General of Research and Development of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.
With this achievement, UGM not only solidifies its position as a leading research university but also reinforces its contribution to producing innovations relevant to industry and societal needs. The 2025 Research Commercialization Program is expected to be a catalyst for the creation of globally competitive research products, support the national development agenda, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
