Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) consistently commits to its role as a higher education institution generating innovative solutions for industrial and societal applications, enhancing national economic resilience and independence.
The Innovative Academy, managed by UGM’s Directorate of Business Development/UGM Science Technopark, serves as a key innovation pipeline. This program empowers innovators and inventors (academics, researchers, and students) to develop digital and non-digital technological innovations, fostering creative outputs and spin-off startups.
The Innovative Academy curriculum employs a semi-structured approach, equipping participants with entrepreneurship and technological capacity-building skills to address societal and industrial challenges. Leveraging technology as an enabler, this program aims to drive massive positive impact.
The program’s uniqueness lies in its multidisciplinary approach, bringing together participants from various fields into productive groups, enhancing solutions for social issues. Participants undergo rigorous selection, guidance, and mentorship to develop a culture of technology-based startup management.
They are introduced to key players in the startup ecosystem, including venture capitalists, private investors, and accelerators. Since 2014, approximately 9,000 talents have participated, yielding numerous founders and co-founders, with some successfully entering acceleration phases and securing investments.
The Innovative Academy program is divided into three stages:
Stage 1: Pre-Incubation
Held twice annually (February/March and August/September) as Innovation Challenge. This stage synergizes innovation potential with startup readiness, developing sustainable business models and strengthening the innovation-based startup ecosystem. UGM Science Techno Park partners with MIT REAP Java for talent scouting.
Stage 2: Incubation
For startups passing pre-incubation. Intensive guidance, industry mentoring, and campus resource access enhance business models, product development, and market preparation. Startups are prepared for pitching sessions with investors, facilitated by PT Gama Multi Usaha Mandiri and PT Inovasi Dharma Bangsa (Kolektiv).
Stage 3: Acceleration
Post-incubation, focusing on growth acceleration. Advanced training, investor networking, and corporate collaboration prepare startups for market expansion, funding, and sustainable growth. Emphasis is placed on marketing, sales, and business network expansion, supported by PT Gama Inovasi Berdikari.
