On 18 March 2025, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in collaboration with the British Council held a workshop entitled ‘Measuring Social Value in Research Translation’ in the framework of the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) Capacity Building Programme in Research and Innovation. The event took place in Room C1-002/003, Innovation and Creativity Centre, UGM. The workshop was attended by approximately 40 participants from several universities.
The workshop is designed to improve Indonesian research providers’ understanding of research translation to improve grant submission effectiveness. Participants will analyse survey results prior to the workshop, discuss challenges in institutionalising a culture of research translation, and identify best practices for tracking research translation activities. The event is divided into two sessions. The first session provides an overview of the Indonesian research landscape, while the second session includes a knowledge exchange with experts from Norwich Research Park on international research translation practices. Additional sessions covered equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in grant applications, practical applications of the European Horizon Gender Equality Plan, and training on the SoVaR tool to measure social value in research.
The workshop also aimed to bring together Indonesian researchers and UK innovators behind the Research Translation Report, build on existing baseline data to improve quality and relevance in research innovation, and strengthen research grants informed by social value principles for impactful solutions. The event also provided recommendations to enhance research initiatives and facilitate knowledge transfer in research translation.
In an event attended by various stakeholders, including researchers, innovators, and practitioners from various institutions, Dr Karlisa Priandana, S.T., M.Eng., Acting. Director of Talent Development, Director General of Research and Technology, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, delivered a presentation on the current policy direction and national priorities.
This workshop is a very important first step in building closer cooperation between Indonesia and the UK in developing innovation and turning research results into useful products. With full support from the government, it is hoped that innovative products from Indonesia can provide wider benefits to society.
